Mark, of nunnery fence-fixing fame, is collecting bikes with his wife Jenny to send to Africa. A few years ago they were doing this out of Darwin and sent 7000 bikes to East Timor. Now they are collecting bikes in Mortdale, Sydney and sending them to Africa. The first shipments will be going to the village bicycle project in Ghana. If anybody has bicycles that they want to donate to the project, they can be brought to the Nunnery bike workshop or better yet, taken directly to Mark’s place in Mortdale. If these options don’t work, just call Mark and he’ll work something out.
Mark is very keen for anybody interested to get involved. This could mean making yourself a collection point for your area. People would bring bikes to you and when you think you have more than you want to be staring at, Mark can come and pick them up in his van.
The Nunnery bike workshop has gone to help out at Mark’s place, getting bikes ready for shipment (photos coming soon). If you would like to know when this is going to happen next, get in touch with the Nunnery or check the blog.
Mark’s website is www.goodwillbicycles.com and he can be contacted on 9585 1152 or by email: goodwill_bicycles@yahoo.com.au

I received an email on this as part of BikeSydney list. I am still an active cyclist and have moved to Melbourne (ah, sweet relief). I personally have only one bike, in heavy use, but could let lot of people know of your project if relevant. So is there a similar scheme set up in Melbourne?

Dear Sir,
I recently saw the great work you are doing in Africa and the world on the internet. Congratulations! Sending large quantity of bicycles free in the world is a great accomplishment, especially in the current economic environment.
We, the Association Chretienne Inter denominationelle du Cameroun (ACIC) specialize in working with disadvantaged men and women in rural areas in Cameroon. We are the oldest and largest federation or association involved in assisting men and women who are trapped in poverty. Our volunteers and trainees are constantly in the villages seeking to improve the effectiveness of Aids prevention in rural communities nationwide.
We would love to apply for a container of Bikes.
Presently I am in Pasadena , USA, studying for a PHD in International Development and will be back in Cameroon in September 2007
If you have questions, please call me at 626 318 0298. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Rev Talla Andre

hi i have recently become aware of your operations, and as a cyclist myself ,i notice many push bikes discarded and dumped sometimes with its only problem being the chain coming off or a flat tyre. my desire is to be able to provide these same very bikes to a less fortunate child who would be able to appreciate the chance of having a form of transport to get to school, or just play with their friends.
we am currently collecting pushbikes we find thrown out, however we dont have facilities to store them nor do we have the funds to ship them.if you think i could be of assistance to your cause i would be happy to help.
i think many kids in many countries could benefit from this venture.
